Sacred turquoise glacial lakes, the dramatic Gokyo Ri viewpoint (5,357m) with a 360° panorama of four 8,000m peaks, and the vast Ngozumpa Glacier — a quieter alternative to the main EBC trail.
Gokyo Ri Trek | Gokyo Lakes | Gokyo Valley | Everest Region
The Gokyo Ri Trek is one of the most scenic high-altitude trekking journeys in Nepal's Everest region. Starting and ending in Kathmandu, the adventure combines a mountain flight to Lukla with a gradual trek through Sherpa villages, alpine forests, glacial valleys and the spectacular Gokyo Valley.
The route follows the Dudh Koshi Valley from Lukla toward Namche Bazaar before leaving the main Everest Base Camp trail and heading toward Dole, Machhermo and Gokyo.
At Gokyo, trekkers discover a chain of turquoise glacial lakes surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the world. The highlight is the early-morning ascent of Gokyo Ri at approximately 5,357 meters, one of the region's premier viewpoints.
From the summit, clear weather can reveal an extraordinary panorama including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and numerous other Himalayan peaks.
The journey is designed as a 15-day Kathmandu-to-Kathmandu itinerary, giving travelers time for preparation, acclimatization, the Gokyo Ri climb, Gokyo Valley exploration and the return journey to Kathmandu.
Nepal Tourism Board identifies Gokyo Valley as one of the attractions within Sagarmatha National Park and lists Lukla as the principal air access point from Kathmandu.
A guide is strongly recommended for this high-altitude trek.
A knowledgeable local guide can help with:

The Gokyo Ri Trek is best described as moderate to challenging at lower elevations and strenuous at high altitude.
The trek does not normally require technical mountaineering skills, but the altitude makes the journey demanding.
The major challenges include:
The most physically demanding section is generally the climb from Gokyo to Gokyo Ri.
Altitude is one of the most important considerations on this trek.
The route rises from approximately 1,400 m in Kathmandu to 5,357 m at Gokyo Ri.
The itinerary therefore includes an acclimatization day in Namche and an additional day around Gokyo.
Do not treat acclimatization as wasted time.
It is an essential part of a responsible high-altitude itinerary.
Possible symptoms of altitude sickness can include:
If symptoms worsen or become severe, tell your guide immediately.
Never continue ascending simply to stay on schedule if you are seriously unwell.
Descent may be necessary.
Travelers should also discuss altitude-related medication with an appropriately qualified medical professional before their trek.
Spring is one of the most popular periods for trekking in the Everest region.
Potential advantages include:
Autumn is another excellent period.
The post-monsoon atmosphere often provides clear mountain visibility.
Winter trekking is possible for experienced and well-prepared trekkers.
However, higher sections can be very cold and snow can affect trail conditions.
Monsoon brings rain and cloud to many parts of Nepal.
Mountain flights and trail conditions can become less predictable.
Nepal Tourism Board currently identifies October–November and March–May as the best seasons for Sagarmatha National Park, while noting snow during winter and rainy conditions during the monsoon period.
Weather can change rapidly in the Himalayas.
At lower elevations, daytime conditions can be relatively comfortable.
At Gokyo and Gokyo Ri, temperatures can be extremely cold, especially before sunrise.
Pack for:
Do not rely solely on Kathmandu weather forecasts.
The Gokyo Lakes are the defining natural attraction of this trek.
The turquoise glacial lakes are surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks and the Ngozumpa Glacier.
The lakes offer a completely different trekking experience from the classic Everest Base Camp route.
The Gokyo Valley is closely associated with the Ngozumpa Glacier, creating a dramatic landscape of ice, rock, moraine and glacial lakes.
The glacier environment becomes one of the defining visual experiences of the trek as you approach Gokyo.
The Gokyo Ri sunrise is one of the major reasons trekkers choose this route.
The climb normally begins before sunrise.
From the summit, the first light gradually illuminates the surrounding peaks.
The combination of:
Gokyo Lakes + Ngozumpa Glacier + Everest + sunrise + high Himalayan peaks
creates the signature experience of the trek.
